May is the last month for buddies. Please be sure to send yours something.

We will do a shortened version for the summer June – August. You should send your buddy 1-2 things a month. I will NOT be matching up by grade level since it is a shortened version.

If your buddy sent you NOTHING last this whole semester (they did not have to send presents, letters/cards were fine) please e-mail me so I can ask them to sit this round out.

Please do NOT sign up if you are not certain if you can follow through. A few people bailed once people were assigned, and it really wasn’t far to me or the people they had. I know that this summer I will be going back and forth from Florida to Ohio, so I won’t be participating, but I will assign buddies.

In order to participate, please fill out the following survey and e-mail to positivelypt at gmail dot com International teachers, student teachers, students studying to be teachers are welcome.

Tumblr name:

Name you want your envelope addressed to:

Address:

Are you willing to send to an international participant:

The following questions are to help your buddy decide on things to send you:

Fav. Color

Fav. Candy

Fav. thing to do to relax

Hobbies:

Anything else you want them to know:

If you participated last time, who did you have (makes it easier to not give you the same person):

Cut off for signing up is 5/20.

This is a short sign up window, so please reblog and pass the word on.

firstclassroom:

I’m currently working on a professional development experience through Georgia Tech and NASA on Project-Based Inquiry Learning (PBIL). During the first course, we learned about PBIL by participating as students in a PBIL lesson. The lesson was designed to teach physical science concepts, but I’ve tweaked it a bit to focus on scientific investigations – something that is part of our Earth Science curriculum. Now that our state testing is over, I needed something to keep my students’ attention for the last month of school.

We started our project on Friday. My advanced classes jumped right on board, as expected. But my general classes, wow. I’m amazed at the change in their behavior. It’s always been my goal to make my classroom very inquiry oriented, and now I see that I really need to make some changes for next year (note not-so-subtle hint at future plans. Details to follow soon).

If anyone is interested, NASA/Georgia Tech offer a few different FREE professional development programs that are online. They address topics like PBIL, Technology Integration, Statistics, and Robotics. The PBIL program I’m working on has really impressed me so far. It’s on par with a typical college course (read: you WILL do work), and the lessons you learn will be immediately transferable to your classroom.

Free PD is always worth a signal boost.

I think it will be worth the money. Not everything will fit you, or the students you have — but I’m confident that everyone will take something away from this book. I’ve already read 2 chapters of it — and it can be a little hokey cutesy at times, but overall it has REAL approaches to working with kids in different situations that leaves the kid still feeling loved, and you not feeling exhausted. When the basics are under control, we excel as teachers. When we excel as teachers and our students’ self-worths are in tact, they can focus and explore learning with less hurdles in their way.
