I always thought I wanted to go into teaching to make a difference, but realized I care a hundred times more about taking care of the kids’ emotional and social needs than about teaching the curriculum. It’s not like I can swoop into the worst-off places and adopt a classroom of kids or something and even then that feels like it’s assuming bad of their parents, who just need systemic help. Now what? What career do I choose to really help kids at that most basic necessary level?
A special education degree that would allow you to work with developmentally delayed students transition to a work environment sounds like it might be a fit.
Typically, students at that level are in high school as “certificate” attendance, and work in small groups and one on one with teachers on life skills (cooking, health care, cleaning), and job skills (basic math, phone and computer operations). Often, students are paired with a community group or job to actually give them real experience and training. For example, a student could go half day at school working on skills, and then go to Good Will in the afternoon for a few hours.
Also, social work can put you in similar one-on-one or small group settings. That would also give you opportunities to work with adults. After all, our students with the greatest needs do grow up to be adults with needs.
Hope that helps. Cheers,
GWALP.
I found one primary Team Teachers Buddies in my spam box this morning. If there is a primary teacher that wants to participate that hasn’t signed up yet, please message me:

The only buddies I have left to assign are those in Early Childhood / Primary. Due to the range of the participants for that it will be hard to give you someone with the same grade as you, but they will be primary.
If you teach high school or intermediate, and did not receive the info on your buddy please check your spam, and if it is not there please e-mail me.
One person in intermediate left off part of their address. I e-mailed that person about it, so please be sure to get back to me!
We had 51 people sign up for Team Teachers Buddies.
I’ll give you the person you have as soon as I figure it all out. Watch your e-mails!

Reminder! Deadline to sign up for Team Teachers Buddies is tomorrow at 12:00 PM EST.
How it works:
Each person will be assigned a buddy (you will most likely not have the person who has you).
During the course of this semester, you will be asked to mail 1-2 cards, notes of encouragement etc. Actual gift items are up to you, but please know that we all know money is tight and it is unlikely that you will receive a gift (so don’t feel like you have to). You are also welcome to make something for your buddy.
Whether you reveal yourself right away or not, is up to you. I think it is more fun to wait until the end.
You may put notes of encouragement in their ask box, send fan mail, or spend a little extra time thinking of solutions to problems they may face.
International teachers are welcome. So are pre-service teachers / student teachers.
We will do new buddies once school is out if the idea is still popular.
Tumblr, World-shaker, Girlwithalessonplan, and I are not liable for any lost items, or other problems that occur due to this program. You submit your address and agree to participate at your own risk.
